I've led a variety of strategic planning initiatives in my career, and I typically encounter the same frustration in each process -- people are afraid to dream. I don't know what happens to us after we "grow up" but we lose that child-like enthusiasm for possibilities that drove us to:
- build ramps to jump our bikes in the spirit of Evel Knievel,
- dam up the creeks running behind our homes to create a swimming hole, and
- dream of the day that we would be running our own company
If you can't remember the spirit that I'm writing about, just ask any kid between 8 and 12 years old what he/she wants to be when he/she is a "grown up." You'll typically hear, "Well, first, I'm going to be a dancer. But I'm also going to help sick animals. And then I might be an artist."
The possibilities are endless!
If you've been called to lead, it's time to re-connect with that attitude and dream a little about what your organization can become. Don't limit your followers because you don't dream.
Enjoy the dream! Becky
